Call to Artists

Youth Art Month @ Josiah Quincy Elementary School

MISSION STATEMENT: To expose every Josiah Quincy Elementary School (JQS) student to a variety of Visual Art disciplines, cultures, and history with an inspiring and educational experience through hands-on learning. Diversity issues will be explored, expressed, and celebrated.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the economic climate, JQS no longer has a Visual Arts teacher, leaving our students devoid of the opportunity and guidance to express themselves creatively. As a parent-organized, volunteer-based Visual Art Committee, we are seeking to fill this void for our children. Our goal is to provide every JQS student with an exciting Visual Art experience through hands-on learning. March is national Youth Art Month and we are organizing the 1st Annual JQS Visual Arts Festival to take place March 1st & 2nd, 2012. For two exciting days, artists from our local community will be leading workshops in every JQS classroom, exposing our children & teachers to the power of expression thru the Visual Arts. This years’ theme is "Diversity Thru Art", covering a range of significant artists, movements, techniques and their impact on global culture. The culmination of these two days will be an Art Exhibit where will celebrate these creations, displaying all of the students’ work on the evening of Friday, March 2nd. Your help is needed to make this event a success. We urge you to join us in making JQS and our community richer thru art.

BENEFITS FOR STUDENTS:
• Art education develops students’ creative problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.
• An understanding of multicultural values and beliefs will be fostered, building relationships school-wide.
• Students will experience the sense of joy and accomplishment that comes with creating and sharing their artwork.

BENEFITS FOR TEACHERS:
• Identify ways to use the visual arts to support their students to creatively explore diversity issues.
• Teachers who may be hesitant in their ability to create an arts experience will discover the artist within themselves.
• Acquire new methods that will help strengthen their current skill set, renewing a sense of vigor in the classroom.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
• Volunteer your time and talents as an Artist or simply as an Enthusiast, leading a lesson in one of our 44 classrooms.
• Make a tax-deductible contribution to provide art supplies and to cover the costs of an inspiring Art Exhibit where our students can experience a great sense of pride and accomplishment in their work.
• Help by developing appropriate lesson plans that fit within our mission to expose students to a variety of Visual Art disciplines, cultures, and history.
• All partners and sponsors will be acknowledged in promotional announcements and publications.

Exploring the Past:

Archaeology in the Upper Mississippi River Valley

Walking beside thousand-year-old burial mounds, flaking raw stone into tools, learning how potsherds tell us about human behavior, and understanding how humans adapt to complex, ever-changing environments - our 2012 NEH Summer Institute features all this and more.

The Mississippi Valley Archaeology Center at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse will offer a three-week NEH Summer Institute on July 9 thru 27, 2012. This dynamic learning experience for K-12 teachers will explore how Native Americans and Euro-Americans have adapted to the Upper Mississippi River Valley over the past 13,500 years, and how archaeology leads to an understanding of how human cultures change and adapt through time.

The Institute will feature a one-day excavation experience, field trips to archaeological sites, hands-on laboratory and workshop activities, demonstrations, and classroom activities. Individual projects will help participants tailor the content to their own teaching areas. NEH Summer Scholars receive a $2,700 stipend to help offset their expenses.

Application and other information on the Institute will be available online at
http://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/neh.htm. The deadline for applications is March 1, 2012.

Worcester Art Museum
Professional Development Partnership Program

In response to Education Reform legislation that mandates school system-sponsored Professional Development opportunities for all teachers, the Worcester Art Museum has created its Professional Development Partnership Program.

Since then Professional Development Partnerships have been available to school systems in Central Massachusetts. These Partnerships allow teachers in public school systems to attend classes at the Worcester Art Museum free of any charge to them. Each Partnership is underwritten by the individual school system with administrative support from the Worcester Art Museum. Contact your school district to find out if they have become a Professional Development Partner.

A Professional Development Partnership places teachers in adult education courses at the Worcester Art Museum where they can earn Professional Development Points in the visual arts, creative writing, technology and the humanities. Teachers can also enroll in education classes that focus on the museum as an interdisciplinary teaching resource. We have a state-of-the-art Computer Studio and corresponding course instruction.

For more information on how your school district can join the Professional Development Partnership Program, call the Outreach Coordinator at 508.799.4406, x3014 or email to transactions@worcesterart.org
