Massachusetts Art Education Association
New England Art Education Conference

March 5, 2010
Dear M.A.E.A. Members,

This is a follow-up message to one we sent out in February about an Elementary Art Exhibit at the State Transportation Building. This exhibit which will hang from March 20 - April 30, 2010 has been renamed the:

Massachusetts Art Education Association - K - 6 Art Exhibit - Celebrating Youth Art Month.

Beginning this year, the M.A.E.A. and the N.E.A.E.C. moved their office to the State Transportation Building. As part of this move, the N.E.A.E.C. in cooperation with the M.A.E.A. is coordinating a series of exhibitions in the 2nd floor gallery space where the annual The Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards exhibition has hung for many years in February. So far this school year, we have had a 9-12 Photography Exhibit in the fall and are currently hosting the 2010 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards exhibit.

We are writing to you because you are a member of M.A.E.A. which tells us you care about the future of and celebrating art education in Massachusetts. We apologize for the lateness of this request which was delayed by our work updating and mounting the current Scholastic exhibit.

Art All-State Celebrates 22 Years

For twenty two years Art All-State has been providing intensive experiences in art for 145 of the most talented high school juniors from across the state. Begun through an off-hand suggestion of a retired art teacher almost 25 years ago, AAS has paired over 3,090 students with 350 artist/mentors through 655 hours of gallery and studio experiences that have inspired, challenged and engaged them all to think creatively about themselves and the role that are can play in life after high school.

Art All-State, a program of the Worcester Art Museum, co-sponsored by MAEA is funded in part through the generosity of the Freelander Education Fund, and this year through a gift from Fallon Community Health Plan and other private donors. Throughout its history AAS has relied on an important network of art education professionals throughout the state for both support and volunteering. The grass roots nature of the program where art teachers nominate students from their schools, are involved in the selection of student participants and assist at the event can be seen as key to its longevity and success.

This year on, May 29th and 30th, the 145 student participants from 103 Massachusetts high schools worked on 8 separate studio projects, each lead by 2 artist/mentors. The student driven and artist facilitated studio are group projects, which take their inspiration from works in the museum's collection. In this way Art All-State encourages these young artists to view museums as resources for their art and for life. The theme of the program for the last several years has been Limits-No-Limits. The limited materials, both traditional and non-traditional, are often recycled. For the past few years we have been grateful to the recycling center Extras for Creative Learning in Dorchester for their support of our efforts. This year at Art All-State the different groups worked with a variety of materials including carpet tubes, black ink, shoelaces, vinyl records, paint, Styrofoam, ribbon, balloons, calendar covers, hula hoops, muslin, orange construction fencing, old socks, shredded paper and laminate sample chips.

On Saturday afternoon their pride was palpable as the students toured the Final Exhibition of their work, families in tow. So much had been achieved in two short days. The students had come together with a group of strangers - albeit their peers, been inspired by art, brainstormed together and produced sophisticated finished group installations using "materials" that they never conceived could be made into art. The installations showed that the students had moved beyond individual ownership and pride to group ownership. The limited materials were challenging, but allowed them to stretch in their creativity and ultimately to achieve more. It was obvious that this freeing, out-of-the-box experience would be a pivotal one for many of the students involved. This coupled with the exposure to 16 art professional allowed them to see the breadth of creative opportunities available in art after high school and that these could be a reality for them. Another Art All-State was over.

Many thanks indeed to MAEA for its ongoing support and sponsorship of Art All-State, and to all the individual MAEA members who have given of their time and energies to ensure the continued success of our educational efforts and goals.
